There is a diamond shaped thread form (a diamond shaped wire formed into a 
helix) that can be used to repair damaged internal screw threads.  The tread 
form is called Heli-Coil and can be found at:  http://www.helicoils.com/  I 
have seen these used on pressure vessels made for the US Government.  The 
hole is drilled and taped with a special Heli-Coil tap and then the thread 
form is inserted with a special Heli-Coil insertion tool.  You could ask the 
manufacturer if this repair would be acceptable on an aluminum LP gas 
cylinder.
