 RV thermostats don't use a mercury bulb as the switch, they have
contact points. That way, leveling is unimportant, unlike a household
thermostat of the classic Honeywell round design.

Yes, they're all low voltage, 12VDC in your A/S, 24VAC in your house.
That's also the reason a modern digital t-stat probably won't work, the
electronics operate from the incoming voltage. I say "probably" because
I've not experimented with one to see. It actually wouldn't surprise me
if a digital t-stat worked correctly in an RV, but the only way to KNOW
would be to try.
