Patti - the switch would be the switch inside the trailer that turns the
'porch-light' on and off... unscrew the switch panel and examine the
switch... might be a good time to buy a little volt/ohm meter ('VOM')...
Radio Shack has 'em for about $10.... the 'plate' would be the backing plate
to the light fixture itself. Electricity is kind of an 'all-or-nothing'
proposition - even 'intermittent' operation is the result of a short circuit
or open circuit 'making and breaking'... so it could have been 'just about
to fail' for a long time, and then one day, just quit working.

I usually do electrical work 'hot' - that is, i leave the power on, unless
it's high voltage or high current...but i hasten to add that i've been 'bit'
many many times, and it havnt afektd me at all...
