Joy,
 Actually, many modern vehicles have a fuse in the alternator wire, my
Dodge truck does. Such a fuse would have prevented a wiring harness
meltdown in our 1966 Chevy pickup truck.

A catastrophe fuse is highly recommended by many experts; some use one
of 300 amps (for large RVs such as motorhomes), but I made mine 50 amps.
It's within a few inches of the batteries.
