I also have a '66 Safari that I am slowly returning to service (a
distinction from restoring).  I also had significant wood rot in the rear
compartment as well as a junk holding tank and holding tank cover.  I
inquired on list and after considering the various recommendations I decided
to use penetrating epoxy resin brushed over and allowed to be soaked into
the rotted area.  I began by attaching a piece of 1/4" plywood under the
rear floor cut to cover the entire rear area from the last crossmember
rearward.  I brushed penetrating epoxy resin over the rotted floor, allowed
it to cure, then added a second layer of 1/4" plywood on top.  Like making a
plywood and penetrating epoxy resin sandwich.  It is now solid and I am
satisfied with the quality and strength of the repaired section.

You are braver and more determined than I if you remove the body shell from
the frame.  I have read discussions of doing so on the VACList but wouldn't
tackle it myself.  For one thing, you will have to create a jig or other
method of lifting and supporting the shell as it is removed and while stored
or the body shell will be seriously distorted.  I assume you have a secure
inside work area with sufficient space to store both the body shell and
frame for a long period of time.

Unless you simply must or prefer to replace the entire floor I would
recommend accomplishing repairs in place.  Another method is to cut out
rotted sections using right angle corners and patching in plywood.  This can
be done either by making the longitudinal cuts over the centers of the frame
rails and side to side over the crossmembers or, if only smaller pieces, use
screws and glue to attach supports cut from scrap plywood under the seams.

Many list members have done similar repairs replacing or coating only the
damaged areas.  Few have tackled removal of the shell.

I have no information to offer regarding your shell but will be happy to
answer questions regarding the repairs I have accomplished.
