Many of us have, or will replace their Univolt. The difference between 
most "chargers" and most converters is the converter fulfills a dual 
role. Your understanding is almost correct. The converter
gets its power from the 120V AC side of the house. It outputs 12V to 
those fixtures and appliances that need them. At the same time it 
provides a quasi regulated charging current to the house
batteries.
The quality of the charge depends on the type of converter. In it's day 
the Univolt series were the most sophisticated converter available. 
Simple yet effective. The electronics industry has moved on
since then. Nearly all the available converters put out more power from 
a smaller unit with less heat and noise. Some offer a more sophisticated 
charge monitoring system that will extend the life of
you coaches battery.
Chargers, on the other hand, do just that. They typically do not provide 
a voltage regulated output.
