And thanks for the suggestions. I think taking an old panel to a furniture
refinisher to get something custom mixed is probably the way to go for me. I
am not a wood worker but I am a amateur machinist working with metal.

As for the top protective layer -- there doesn't seem to be any. It looks
like the original was an oil finish. There is no sheen at all. I tried a
satin polyurethane top coat as recommended by the home improvement store
folks and it has much more shine than the original 33 year old panels.
That's why I was wondering if the Matco oil finish was what the factory
provided originally.

Now to find a furniture refinisher who will mix up the appropriate stain for
me.
