I thought I'd stick my nose in this thread.

 Any state should  issue you a temp
in transit tag as long as you come up with the sales tax for the
transaction!  $$$s!  In Florida, the state wants the payment in CASH only.
The sales tax in VA was only half of the FL tax.  For this reason, many use
a valid tag from another home state trailer and take the chance that they
won't be pulled
over.  Even then, the officer might not notice that the title is for a
utility trailer rather than?  A friend used the title/plates from his Honda
Rebel on his Honda Goldwing.  Officers stopped him and didn't give a thought
to the fact that the serial number and machine description didn't match the
registration/plate.

BTW, other states don't have to honor the in transit tags.  Guess it depends
on the mood of the officer.

To get the job done properly, why not get the title notarized as sold to, do
the mail thing . . . and get the title/plates in the home state.  Then pick
up the trailer with the proper plate.  If the seller isn't comfortable with
this arrangement to save both many hundreds of dollars, maybe the sale isn't
OK.  If the seller is providing  you with a current title, it means that
he's paid the taxes.  If not, there are back taxes that will have to be paid
before the title can be issued for in transit.

I've bought vehicles where the seller tried to avoid paying the sales tax.
Meant that I couldn't get a clear title until the seller paid the proper
taxes, got a legal title, etc.  A few days advance planning could save a lot
of headaches.

All this is my experience and I'm no expert.  Just learned the hard way how
the experienced do it.
