[A/S] Water System Question

Discovered a leak in our water storage tank,  I found a fitting had failed.  
In looking a the manual, the system only shows a filling spout location and a 
single pipe leading to the water pump.  For whatever reason, someone had 
added another fitting at the bottom of the tank directly across from the main 
line, about a 3/8 pipe running around the corner behind the arm of the sofa 
and back to a "T" at the center of the end of the tank and then down to the 
drain hole.  Does anyone have this type of set-up.  Can I eliminate it when I 
reinstall the tank,  or does anyone know why I would need it.  Any help would 
be appreciated.  I figure the more fittings the more places for it to develop 
a leak.
