You folks have never had to live with a VW van.
Get a hand full of hex bolts.  Find one that has a
a head that fits into the hex socket that would
ordinarily require the allen wrench.  Use the vice-grips
to turn the end of the bolt.  To be real fancy you can
place two nuts on the bolt tightly together and use
a socket wrench on the nuts.
