    As Jim says below, the diesel runs very lean, and this together with the
higher BTU value of diesel fuel makes for the higher operating efficiency.
Quoting from an article in the Power Stroke Registry,
"Gasoline engines always have an air to fuel ratio  of 14 parts air to 1
part fuel. The spark plug ignites the air/fuel mixture.  With the diesel's
"heat" design, we are able to vary the air to fuel mixture.  The amount of
fuel injected to ignite the diesel's hot compressed air could be as low as
80 parts of air to 1 part of fuel at idle.  At full load the diesel is
mixing air to fuel at approximately 20 to 1.  The efficiency is better than
the 14 to 1 mix of a gasoline engine."
