Re: [A/S] Pickup (and other) Questions

Don,
We tow with a pickup truck, 8' bed and standard cab. We added a cap
that's the same height as the top of the cab that has side-opening doors
that run from the front to about 2/3 back. Then, we installed shelves
that are about 12" wide, the full length of the doors plus a bit so we
can set 3 boxes on each. I found some nice 12"W X 9"H X 22"L wood boxes,
but there are Tupperware-type boxes that will also work. A 1X4 lip keeps
things from sliding off the shelves, and they're fastened to the sides
of the P/U box with 2 3/8" bolts going into Riv-Nuts installed in the
area of the stake pockets. It takes about 5 minutes to remove or install
the shelves.

Those boxes hold things like laundry soap, spare oil, CDs, etc. and are
easily accessable w/o climbing into the back of the truck. Generally,
when we set up camp, the anti-sway bar, etc. get thrown over the
tailgate into the rear of the truck, so we seldom have to even lower the
tailgate. However, it WILL lower and miss the tounge jack just fine.

After travelling with this setup for 2 months on an extended trip, we're
very happy with it.

The truck is a 1994 Dodge 3/4-ton with the Cummins. Average MPG is about
15 while towing.
