Rick, A battery does act as a filter, but not as a voltage regulator. 
A diode is a one may electrical valve and does not act as a voltage 
regulator either. Diodes are used to change AC voltage to DC voltage 
so your battery will accept it. Most convertors have two outputs. One 
is regulated to approx 13.65 volts for charging the storage battery. 
The other output is for operating trailer appliances and is regulated 
nearer to 12 volts. Possibly you convertor is hooked up wrong or is 
developing a regulator problem and allowing to much voltage to the 
trailer circuts. Get a good DC voltage meter and check both circuts. 
You could also take it to a RV repair shop. They would be able to 
tell you your problem. Good luck.
