Jack,
You can plug an older airstream into a GFI, but newer models, like my 96
Bvan have a GFI of their own and that causes the GFI outlet to fault
out.  I am not an electrical wizard, not even close, but this was
explained to me online when I couldn't figure out why; on a cold night
outside my house when I had the heat strip on because I hadn't
winterized yet, it kept shutting down.  It was when the load was
slightly heavier than just lights and when high amp items were being
run.  The technical explanation will be forthcoming from another listee,
I'm sure, but you will note there are no GFI plugs at the electrical
hookup box in campgrounds.
Don't forget to use the proper guage cord for long runs to electricity. 
Standard hardware store extension cords aren't sufficient to carry the
load you need. Get the extra thick cords available from RV and Marine
outlet stores.
