Any other appliances plugged into the same receptacle cause the same
problem?  Sometimes, a loose wire of a receptacle will overheat and after it
toasts the wire, it will burn the insulation off the lead - short!  Hope you
pulled the receptacle and looked at the service wires.

I think you should be thankful that you had it plugged into a GFI circuit.
Standing on the wet ground, if the short is in the hot or neutral line could
be an elightening experience!
