Re: [A/S] Chevy Transmissions for Towing -Continuing the Discussion

The 3/4 ton trannie is a GM Catalogue designation -MT1- aka 4L80E. (like a
TH400)
Heavy duty drums and servo. Different oil flow characteristics. Much
stronger trannie.
Electronic lock-up torque converter in 4th gear (OD).

The 1/2 ton trannie is a GM Catalogue designation -MD8- aka 4L60. (old)
700R4. (like a TH350) It is not a very strong trannie by design. There
are kits to beef them up, stronger bigger servo and larger drums, but to
have it done at a trans shop is about $1,500 to $1,700. These trannies,
when used for towing, create higher temperatures, and suffer pre mature
wear, etc. etc.

The 3/4 ton unit is a stronger unit also, bla bla bla, all found in the shop
manual available from the dealer on CD. (NOT a p.o.s. Chilton or 'back
yard' mechanic, manual)

There use to be a listee who rebuilt ### of these units. I'm sure he can
explain the oil flow / shift characteristics, if you need.
