Hunter  - The carpet can be removed by cutting it away from the cabinets, 
etc. with a sharp carpet knife.  Leaving the carpet in closets, cabinets 
etc. is a good idea.

You then have less to recover with Prego or whatever.  I recently did a 
1970 13' PlayPac floor over in 12" X 12" squares of parque.  It turned out 
great.  You do have to add molding for that finished look.  You also need 
to make sure any floor level doors have clearance so they don't scratch the 
floor when opening and closing.

AND it's easier to clean especially with dogs (I only have one a Pekinese lady)
It looks really nice. It is however, colder so small area rugs are 
necessary which will add decor and a comfortable feel to bare feet.
