The 5" channel is correctly described.  Directly under the 5" channel is the
smaller channel that is welded parallel and serves as the attachment for the
cross angle iron that holds the rear bottom of the tank.  Both the cross
angle iron and the smaller channel were nearly rusted completely away.  The
5" channel is badly rusted, but with some care will be serviceable.

Thanks for your detailed description and I will be able to accomplish the
renovation "by working smarter".
