Bill,

    It is far too long since my last physics class in school to even begin
to figure out the lever mechanics.  However, this old bean counter sees that
the spring bars are not attached to the hitch ball, but rather to the
trailer hitch below the hitch ball.  The downward force from the weight of
the trailer tongue appears to me to be transferred to the hitch, and
lessened on the ball, thus supporting earlier e-mail statements.
