[A/S] Re: Chev and Fords

Kimm:

     My 1984 Suburban C20 has a 7.4 liter gas engine, generating 230
HP at 3800 rpm; it has a 3.21:1 rear axle. They also offered a 3.73:1
and a 4.1:1. I thought these ratios were still available, but maybe
they've dropped the 3.21:1 option. The engineer (ME) who first owned
it apparently felt he did not need a higher ratio, as he was only
towing a 23' 1972 Safari. Anyhow, the 7.4 liter engine has been
around for a long time - longer than 1984.
The 290 HP you refer to on the 1996 and later models is a bump up
on the HP from the 230 on my 1984.
I know many people who tow with a 1500; that wouldn't be my
choice either - I now have a 1999 2500 LS with a 4.1:1 rear end for my
28' Excella (GVWR 8200#). I, too, like the GM products, at least the
gas ones.
