Re: [A/S] Best time to go to the Grand Canyon in 2001?????

I think the April-May time is the nicest. Just starting to warm up from
winter, and the rains haven't come yet.

Best to make reservations very early in the year. Like January. The
North Rim campgrounds fill quickly, as it's the most popular for
RV'ers. On the South Rim, the Mather Campground is boondocking. No
electricity, water, or sewer, although there are water standpipes
scattered around the area so you can fill your containers and hump then
to the trailer. Generators allowed only for two hours in the a.m. and
another two in the evening. 7-9 a.m. and 6-8 p.m. IIRC.

Absolutely no grass or ground cover, except for pine needles covering
the dirt.

We went there in July, and it was HOT. The West loop was closed to
private vehicles, so if you wanted to see that you had to take the
tram. East loop was OK for private vehicles, and is well worth the
drive. Stop everywhere you can, as there are some really interesting
historical sites.

Head East to Cameron, to the Trading Post, and have lunch. The Navajo
Taco is delicious, and one is enough for two people. They'll gladly
provide an extra plate, and it's inexpensive. They make the real $$ in
the gift shop, :-)

There are a couple of RV parks outside the G.C. Nat'l Park boundary,
with all the amenities if you have to go that way. Try a Web search for
"Grand Canyon" and you'll have lots of hits.

It's well worth the trip. We took some guests from New Zealand last
January, and they actually cried when they walked out to the edge. It's
pretty awesome.
