Maybe so, maybe no.

Ford's trailer towing guide lists the Explorer's maximum loaded 
trailer weights as:

4 door 4X2 automatic:
4.0L OHV V6  3.73:1 - 4,960 lbs. 3.55:1 - 3,960 lbs.
4.0L SOHC V6 3.73:1 - 5,940 lbs. 3.55:1 - 4,960 lbs.
5.0L V8 3.55:1 - 5,820 lbs. 3.73:1 - 6,820 lbs.

Some feel that the improved aerodynamics of the Airstream enable 
maximum towing weights to be increased. As has been stated there are 
sway concerns with the Explorer. I tow a '90 25' Excella (5,100 lbs. 
dry) with the V8 Explorer (w/ Michelin tires) and Hensley without
sway problems. I would not recommend it without the Hensley (Pulrite,
etc.) unless it was off freeway at lower speeds.
