About 14-15 years ago I was evaluating Fords as a tow vehicle, planning to
buy one. I was amazed at the difference in towing capacity of the manual vs
the automatic transmission back then. I was told the problem was with the
clutch. Apparently this has not changed.

I guess they assume that we would wear out the clutch from first gear
standing starts with heavy loads during the warranty period and it might
cost them some buck$. Since this is probably the same clutch material that
the other manufacturers use, we are probably safe in assuming this 2900
pound limitation is only a CYA limitation during the warranty period. It
may not actually have any influence on use once the warranty has expired by
a safe and sane driver.
