RE: [A/S] Inspection tips for '60 Overlander?
Terry, It sounds like you are looking at the same trailer I am. No, I do not
want to buy. Its just that I have a 60 Overlander, and I would like to
compare it to what I already have. It is located about 3 hours south of
where I live in Cleveland and I am just itching to take a look.
Things to look for:
~Any signs of leakage-puddles on the floor, streaky walls.
~Verify that the appliances all work-toilet flapper valve was aluminum, and
corrodes badly-had to replace mine a decade ago.
~Door handle-make sure that it locks securely-they wear out with usage and
exact replacement is unavailable.
~Inspect for rust on the frame-I have had problems up near the coupler and
back by the bumper.
~If the drapes are original than I bet that this trailer has been stored
indoors.
~It has dual axles, nice, it was an option-I have the single. You will have
more stability on the highway.
~Take a thorough look at it. Open all doors, work everything. If it is in
good shape I believe that they are asking a fair price.
~Suggestion, Always travel with a full fresh water tank. It is located in
front under the couch. It could use the extra weight up front for stability,
mine without the water only has about 7 or 8% tongue weight. You really need
10 to 15% for a stable ride.
~The wiring harness used in '60 was not wired the same as todays. Change the
trailer to match the plug on your Tahoe, not the other way around.
~Sewer outlet is on the CURBSIDE and is of different diameter than modern
sewer hoses. The dump valve has been replaced and while they
were at it they put a modern sewer connection with pipe leading to the
roadside, where all sewer connections are now.
~You will need to carry extra fresh water hose, the connection is in the
front, not the rear.
Your Tahoe will have no problem with a '60 Overlander. The dry weight was
near 3500. Mine loaded is under 5000#, yours with the extra axle may be just
over 5000#, but not by much.
If you are going down to take a look I would love to meet you there if it
works out with my schedule. If interested contact me offline.
