[A/S] AS and HAM usage

A question for all you HAMs out there.  When on the road, how do you use
your radios and capabilities?  Are you using small hand-held transceivers to
talk to fellow travelers in much the same manner as CB users (sorry about
the comparison, NO affront intended!).  Are you using larger, more powerful
units for 'round-the-world DX'ing?
I'm frustrated by the limitations of CB and cel communications, and Amateur
Radio seems to be an answer.  Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
