Sounds to me like the weight distribution was too light on the hitch.  You
need 10-15% of the gross trailer weight on the hitch ball.   That being the
case, you need an equalizer hitch, and you need some sway control.  I, too,
had a frightening experience on a curvy road when I had the hitch weight too
light.  Even a short lighter weight trailer can "throw you around" if the
weight distribution is wrong.
Re: your K-10 tow vehicle, I bet you are over the tow rating with a 32' A/S.
Try to get a K-20/K-2500 (3/4 ton) vehicle with at least a 5.7 L engine and
a 4.10 rear end.  Better (but less economical) would be a 7.4 L engine.  For
serious hills, the 4.10 rear axle is best, though many settle for a 3.73 in
the interest of fuel economy solo.  The 3.73 will work but may be a bit
slower climbing the big hills at high altitude.
You did the right thing to slow down.  Don't worry about those behind you.
Pull off when you can safely do so and let them go by.  Just take your time
and get there accident free.
