On my '56 the outside  horizontal rivets went thru  the exterior skin and 
into a metal horizontal channel bracing piece.  These pieces did not 
connect to any of the vertical structural members and serve only to 
provide  back bracing for the expanse of alumininum between two vertical 
structual members.  Inside panels did not connect to these bracing pieces 
but had their own.
