Bob, 

I read an article in a body shop manual about relieving the stress in
sheet metal by taping at the stress points while applying gentle
pressure to the panel. The stress points appeared to be in completely
non intuitive places however. If I were you, I would visit with an OLD
body shop guy to get his advice about this. I am not sure that aluminum
will have the exact characteristics that steel will, but some of the
same principles will no doubt apply. Good luck.
