Some of these are tips already given, but..

Hold on to the bottom of the wheel- move it the direction that you want the
trailer to go (seems to be the #1 tip, so far).

It is easier to line the trailer up pulling forward than backing up- IOW,
if you need to back to the left, pull forward a bit and get the trailer
"cocked" that way before you back up- for me it's easier to pull forward a
long way, if it will line the trailer up with where I want to go.

The most difficult- teach your partner to watch you in the mirrors, so that
they can always see you- which means you can always see them. When I'm
backing, sometimes my wife needs to run to the other side of the trailer to
check trees, etc.- I just stop until I can see her again. Also establish
hand signals (or get walkie talkies, and establish a set "lingo"  "Not that
right... the other right ;-)"

Practice, practice, practice- find a parking lot on an off day, get some
orange cones or something similar, and practice..
