[a/s] Air Conditioner Question

Hi,
 This might be a foolish question, but I must ask.  With all the torrential
rains here in the mid-west the past few days, our '71 Trade Wind has
developed a small water leak around the A/C.  I removed the inside shroud
and the air deflector assembly to get at the actual roof line. It is leaking
around the front  (side facing front of trailer) of the opening in the roof.
I have put some temporary caulking to stop it from getting in until the
weather dries up and I can look into it more.  My question is, where does
all the water go that gets into the top of the A/C when it rains. The shroud
over the A/C that sits on top of the trailer is completely sealed between it
and the trailer roof with caulking. It doesn't appear to be a factory job.
Is it possible that all that water fills up and then works it's way into the
trailer through any weak spot in the seal between the A/C and the roof? I
don't see any way for the water to escape from the A/C unit.  There is a
hose inside that runs between the inner and outer skins to drain the
evaporative water from the A/C when it is working,  I guess I just don't
understand the physical installation of the A/C in terms of water drainage.
Can anyone help me with this?  Is the shroud over the A/C just supposed to
sit on the roof and the water run out from under it??  I have the service
manual for it, but it doesn't address the seal other than to say during
installation put some kind of tape between the A/C mounting flanges and the
roof.
