Doesn't sound right to me - I think it is not supposed to be that way. Mine
is NOT sealed to the roof skin. I know this because I was up there last
year doing maintenance.

As I remember, though, mine is not open on top anyway, so rain shouldn't
get in unless it were blowing from the side pretty hard.

If I were in your situation I would remove the caulking (unless it is
actually keeping roof water from draining INTO the AC area). Probably some
overzealous prior owner sealed it up, thinking it a good idea. Since the
instructions in the manual don't mention it, it oviously wasn't part of the
original installation. Sounds like the "tape" is supposed to go under the
weight-bearing frame of the AC, not the covering shroud.

In my '89 Excella, I had a drain plug up last summer and had to unplug it
up from above. It was dumping the condensation water onto the carpet
inside. Bummer! Make sure your hoses flow freely when you are up there
(take a garden hose up when you go). There are two things that can plug -
the drain hose itself, and also the outlet from the pan just below the
condenser. My problem was this pan drain.
