Well folks,
I do NOT understand all this talk about buffers and polishing and sealant's 
etc.  Last year this list surveyed the group and a lot of people who were 
speaking from vast experience and knowledge of Airstreams....PLUS the 
Airstream Dealer in this State....ALL SAID, do NOT buff the silver skin!  It 
has an acrylic coating from the factory which should never be cleaned with 
anything caustic!  Everyone recommended "DAWN" dishwashing soap which is mild 
but cuts the (road) grease, algae, etc.  
A neighbor of mine cleaned his with a (caustic) cleaner and buffing compound 
with an electric buffer, and RUINED THE SURFACE COMPLETELY!  He ruined the 
acrylic coating.  He was forced to remove all the acrylic, clean the aluminum 
(probably with all of the instructions in the last email I just responded 
to), BUT finished with NO electric buffing..(I looks good now that all the 
buffing circles are finally gone!)  .I don't know what he did to finish it, 
or if he had it re-coated with the acrylic or not.
The main thing Airstream dealers, WCCBI, etc., all say is: The Acrylic 
coating is not meant to scrub.  You need to clean with warm to cool water 
with a mild soap like "Dawn", and a very soft SOFT brush to remove algae, 
grease, etc.  Then just wiped down with a chamois, or the like.  
 So far, all I am willing to do is the latter (underlined in the last 
paragraph), and mine cleans up beautifully, and sparkles!  (I must have the 
acrylic coating in good condition....& I intend to keep it that way.)
I'd like to know why there is such a disparaging difference in opinions on 
this subject.
