When I have my awning open I always have one end lower than the other.  This
aids greatly in the draining of water and prevents serious pocketing and
undue weight place on the awning material and arms.  I did not invent this
idea, I either read it or was told it as a standard practice..

The other thing I do is tie down the ends of the awning arms into stakes in
the ground.  Actually I use those ground screw in thingees.  Each of these
tie downs has a very strong spring attached so that it is not a completely
solid anchor.  This way one reduces the probability of damage due to high
winds.  Sad experience showed me that an ordinary tent peg is not good
enough.  The ground screw thingees can be purchased at Camping World among
other places.  Heck, you can buy them in pet stores like I did.  They are
used together with ropes or chains to keep dogs from running away.
