Okay guys, I asked a hose expert. I went to
Moreland Hose Company in Oakdale NY. They supply water, drainage, hydraulic etc.
hoses to the industry. I was told that white hoses are made of a PVC
material and that it is FDA approved for drinking water. Some of the other hoses
have the capacity to encourage the growth of micro organisms and can off gas and
contaminate water especially if left unused for any period of time. The white
hose is susceptible to UV radiation and should be drained and stored in a
plastic bag during the winter months or when not used, it too off gases and this
leads to the hose becoming dry and brittle. Joe from Riverhead that no longer
uses his hose reel for that purpose.
