On shipboard you generally keep an axe in a handy place, in case you might need
to cut an anchor rode or mooring line in a real hurry.  Some of the more
fearsome, serrated Spyderco folding knives were designed with that purpose in
mind (it is HARD to cut through a thick synthetic hawser when it is under
strain).  I suppose you might want to keep a hefty hammer and appropriate size
drift punch similarly handy, in case you had to drive out the hitch pin from the
receiver, under load, in a hurry.  To be any use these items would have to be
secured at the back of the truck bed, or on the trailer tongue, where you could
get at them instantly.  Or perhaps under the driver's seat ... but other kinds
of junk tend to accumulate there ...
