Karen,  I painted all the old wood  surfaces I could find.  I even
painted the steel drawers that smelled funny.  I took off the fabric
from the foam and washed them carefully.  I sprayed bleach solution on
the foam cushions.  Then rinsed.  It stills smells a little musty.
Yesterday I noticed an area where Don lifted up the carpet.  It was old
wood.  I will paint that soon and rip up all the carpet if I have to.
The wood has not been wet, just old and smelly from the damp air.  If an
old dresser smells bad, you can use shellac; anything that seals it
works fine. You may have to shellac the cupboards inside too.  Me too.
