Re: [a/s] RE:Batteries

I hope the response is enthusiastic.. I am about to replace my "78" setup
with 4 yellow top Optima arranged in 2 sets of (2 in parallel.) .. I was
planning to use two (on/off) high current switches to allow isolation of the
batteries... I was going to replace the existing charging unit with a high
output unit capable of charging 2 batteries and put the whole mess together
with enough high current connectors to allow disconnecting the batteries and
using a portable charge unit in an emergency..

I am planning to feed the existing fuse panel with one of the high current
diode isolators to prevent back feeding a depleted battery when switching to
the backup battery...still working on the layout of everything....

I'm still working on how to modify the area under the front window to
accommodate all the batteries and how to mount the switches, etc.... I was
planning to use welding cable for the connections with the neoprene
insulation... I have a concern about cold flow of the plastic used on most
of the cables available...(comments?)

Reasons for going to the Optima..

Rugged... Apparently the battery of choice for the off road crowd...
Able to stay discharged without sulphating...
Discharges to lower voltage without damage...
Uses standard lead acid charging voltages...
High current charge capacity...
local availability..

I plan to replace the univolt with a multi range, 2 battery unit...
currently torn between Statpower, Ample power and a couple of other mfg's...
any recommendations here would be appreciated as well.....
