I've had that problem just recently, in an almost new furnace, and the answer
I've been getting from the repair pros is that you have to pull the furnace out
and bench test it.  Might be the circuit board, or the delay switch, or any of
several other things, including just dirty contacts in the rather many faston
connectors.

Anyway what they are saying is that you might replace the control module
(printed circuit board) which costs somewhere around eighty or ninety bucks, and
then find you hadn't fixed the problem after all.

But it is easy enough to pull the furnace yourself, no need to pay a
professional to do that part, and in fact they seem glad if they don't have to
spend the time.  I guess everybody is very busy now as the snowbirds get ready
to depart ...

So my furnace (or rather, the innards thereof) is now sitting on a test bench in
the local authorized Suburban repair facility.  I expect to get it back
tomorrow, and leave for Wyoming the day after.

PS late breaking news (5:30 pm today, Tuesday 3/14) the furnace is fixed, it did
indeed need a new board, also a new electrode ... I will pick it up tomorrow
morning.  Cost about $140 all told, including labor.  Considering I would have
had to drive over 100 miles to purchase the board anyway ...and go back again if
anything else turned out to be wrong ...

In Wyoming I am going to be camped at 7000 feet, probably with snow on the
ground, and didn't really want to be without heat ...

PPS later breaking update early Thursday morning (departure day) ... got the
furnace back with new circuit board and new electrode, duly installed it, and Oh
wonder, it doesn't work.  Exactly the same symptoms as before, it starts up, and
at the moment when it would normally ignite, shuts down again.  Grrrr.  Phone
call to Wyoming last night, it was 20 degrees and snowing ...
