I think the point might have been missed by some.  Tom is in a wheel chair.
 Therefore it takes him longer to get in than otherwise.  The door would be
open and cold air would cause the thermostat to kick on the heater while
the door is open for Tom to get in.  Sounds like a potential problem to me.
 He's not referring to leaving the door open without reason.
