Yes, I have a similar configuration. Both my trailer and tow vehicle are 
newer, but the principles are the same. The shortest and best answer is to 
find details from the manufacturer, in my opinion.

My tow vehicle is a 3.4 L V.6 engine with 4WD and automatic transmission. The 
manual says it can tow 5000 lbs, and I have towed as much as 5500 lbs to 
elevations above 11,000 feet. I learned the difference between the dry and 
loaded weight of a trailer early in my towing life. By my standards, you will 
do fine with the set up you have, assuming you do not load the trailer 
excessively.

Before you compute too many numbers I would find out (we all wing it, but you 
gotta start somewhere) what your trailer will weigh full. The 4000 lbs is 
useful, but this is the " dry " weight--with nothing inside, no water (at 8.3 
lbs per gallon the trailer can probably accomodate a lot of weight in fresh 
and waste water). Personal belongings, fuel, tools, etc, all add to the 4000 
lbs your Explorer must pull.
