[VAC] towing with vintage CARs

Wow, thanks a bunch Marc... I'll add your
suggestions to my notes, I was wondering about
using a GTO - I drove one in High School. I
thought maybe a Chevy El Camino might work... My
grandpa has a 1960 International (pick-up...
sigh) that would look great with an Airstream, so
I might check into that option.

According to the original sales literature I have
from that era, you have to use the full size cars
to tow a trailer over 3500 pounds and 350 pound
hitch weight. My 1963 Globe Trotter 19 foot
weighs less than 3500 pounds, but the hitch
weight is 545 pounds. A Pontiac GTO, which was
the mid-size Pontiac supposedly could tow up to
3500 pounds and 350 pounds hitch weight.
Therefore I couldn't even tow my 19 foot Globe
Trotter with a GTO. I couldn't find any info
about towing with a Firebird ....maybe they
didn't even think anyone would try that! I tow
my trailers with a 1973 full size Chrysler
station wagon with a 440 cu in V8 engine. I also
use a 1968 full size Dodge car with a 318 cu in
V8. I don't think I'd want to use a car any
smaller than these to tow the trailer. The
smaller engine Dodge is really marginal. The full
sized cars had heavier frames and running gear.
You need that for towing. A vintage truck would
be a better idea than a Firebird / Camaro If I
were you, I'd look for an Impala SS. They were
pretty cool, they were full size and they had big
engines ...like a "409" or a "427". They'd be a
lot more "cool" than a 1973 Chrysler station
wagon any day! My aunt had a '67 Impala SS
convertible she used to tow her trailer. It only
had a 327, however, and she thought it didn't
have enough power. I also would NOT get a trailer
any bigger than 25 feet if you use a car.
