I've had the same experience as you: a 'good' reading on a voltmeter,
but the battery was junk. That's why it's important to load-test the
battery occassionally. You're right that a hydrometer is actually the
BEST way to test a battery's health, but most folks would never use one.
The "battery guage" in an RV is just an analog voltmeter (my old '68
G.T. had one) or a bank of lights that says "Low, Medium, Full" or
somesuch. They're all useless.
Personally, I'm in love with the eMeter, but then I admit to being a
gadget freak. Watching it tells you all you need to know about your
battery.
