[VAC] Re: Hello!

Hello,

I have stripped the clearcoat off my 68 Sovereign and feel the method I used
saved my seals and other items from being destroyed by the stripper. I used
Bix and a number of other strippers, they all seamed to be about the same
except the environmentally safe ones, they didn't work worth a hoot. (or I
didn't have the patience to wait them out) . I used the gel type so that I
could control where it went. Paint it on a panel at a time and use a plastic
putty knife or scraper to get it off. To clean the residue off I wiped the
area with lacquer thinner and it leaves the surface ready to polish. I did
not wash the stripper off like a lot of others on this list have because I
did not want it to work its way between the panels or run into the window
seals. My way may used a large amount of old rags and newspapers but I don't
have leaks from THIS process.

When you get the clear coat off its now time to polish, oh the fun of it. I
call it therapy! A number of us have tied all different way of doing this, I
call it polishing voodoo. I have gone the DuPont way even tried Mothers and
other aluminum polishes, the one that works and holds up if you do not want
to reapply the clear coat is Rolite products. They are located in Hartland,
WI, you can also purchase it at airstreamdreams.com, good people. Get a
quality buffer and good pads, don't mess around with "cheap imitations." Be
ready to spend a lot of hours and plan on getting real dirty. The end result
is really cool, try it. I love watching people look at themselves as they
pass me on the road.

Good luck,
Ed
