The tongue may be better, but in 1971 they put the battery inside an
enclosed compartment that's inside a closet. To get rid of the gases, they
made a light weight plastic cover for over the battery. There is a hose from
the cover to the outside.  So if Airstream did this properly, it's possible
to put the battery inside the trailer as long as you vent it properly. I
can't say I've found it to be any problem.
