 Your suggestion is good, but an automotive regulator is not the most
efficient for charging deep-cycle batteries. If you'd like to read a
good treatise on the subject, go to:

They have circuitry for a good regulator for this purpose. Such units
are also available commercially, West Marine comes to mind as a source.
(I'm not sure about them, but it was someone catering to sailboat
owners)
