Hunter,

Use your leftover backerboard and latex modified thinset, NOT mastic 
with your 1" tiles and you will be fine. Once the tiles are firmly in 
place, grout with the correct type, sanded or non sanded depending on 
the spacing of you tiles. Because of the size of the area you are 
doing and the small 1" tiles it will last forever. 

We had the whole kitchen area in our motorhome tiled with 12" tiles 
and never had a problem and that was with a trip to Alaska and back.

Make sure you raise the toilet flange to the top of the tile so a 
proper seal can be made.
