Craig,

With the new computer controlled engines, they can produce the same 
horsepower and torque in a much smaller engine.  However, the big 
difference is that on the old big engines, both the torque and 
horsepower come in much lower and over a greater rpm range, therefore 
you can use a three speed automatic rather than the more modern five or 
six speed automatic.
