RE: [A/S] Fuel consumption

Technology and times change but opinions do not. The modern diesel is more
expensive initially but it ends there. I have owned both big block gas and
now my second Duramax. My experience has been that my Duramax's have been
cheaper to operate than my previous big block gas. My big block gas got 9
to 10 mpg towing, I am now getting 12 to 14 mpg towing a trailer that is
2,000 lbs heavier. That is over 30% better mileage for fuel that costs 10%
more. By factory direction, and oil analysis, my oil gets changed every
7,500 to 8,000 miles. My last two lube, oil, and filter changes cost $35
and $42. Most gas changes are 3,000 to 5,000 miles and are not that much
cheaper unless you do it yourself. Members of the Diesel Forum
(www.dieselforum.com) have reported 400,000 to 600,000 miles on the Duramax
without an engine teardown, commercial users have been able to get over
700,000 miles. Most problems reported on the diesel forum are by owners
that have added many performance improvements and increased stresses well
above those experienced by RV tow vehicles. Add hp and torque increases in
the 25 to 30% range and maintenance costs will go up. I would not trade my
Duramax for TWO equivalent gas engine trucks.
