RE: [A/S] Re: First Experience Towing the Bambi
George - I am going to share my 2 cents. Lew mentioned going with the 3.42
as a compromise.
I have a 1991 GMC Suburban with the 350 engine and 3:42 axle. I tow a 1977
23 foot Safari. I live in the mountains of western PA.
My impute is simple - don't do it. I'm on my second transmission. My
Suburban does fine going DOWN hill, but you would not want to be behind me
going uphill!
If you change out the axle go with the 3.73 you will be MUCH happier.
I am trying to make it until next year when I plan to replace my Suburban
and I assure you I will have a 3.73 axle in that one!!!
Sorry to disagree with Lew - but trust me you don't want a 3.42 axle for
towing.
