Make sure there is nothing whatever for them to eat, first of all, and 
anything that might make a nice nest should be in a plastic box.  That 
said, the odds are in their favor due to a reproductive rate that is 
scary.  There are a number of things that might make the area 
uncomfortable, moth balls, dryer sheets, and electronic high frequency 
sound generators, and you can try to close up all places they can get 
in.  I rely on good old Victory mousetraps baited with peanut butter.
